Geoff Newman with Penny, his VW Polo manual, in Sevenoaks

Why learn in a manual?

One licence, both kinds of car.

Pass in a manual and you can drive manual and automatic cars.

A wider choice of first car.

Many of the used cars new drivers can afford are manual. My Choosing Your First Car guide helps you pick a good one.

Real feel for the car.

Clutch control teaches you how a car responds, which helps on hills and in slow traffic.

Prefer automatic? That's absolutely fine. See my automatic lessons →

Learning in Penny, one step at a time

We start in the shallow end. Penny, my VW Polo, has dual controls for everyone's safety, and you stay in control of the pace.

  1. Somewhere quiet first. Moving off, stopping and clutch control, away from traffic.
  2. Hills and junctions. Sevenoaks has plenty of hills, so you'll get confident with hill starts early.
  3. Roundabouts and busier roads. Including Morleys Roundabout and the A21 when you're ready.
  4. Test routes and mock tests. We drive the Sevenoaks test routes, and my mock tests feel like the real thing.

There's no judgement, and you have absolutely nothing to prove to me.

How many hours, and what it costs

Nearly 9 in 10 of my manual learners passed within 30 hours of lessons

Lessons once or twice a week work best, because they give your brain time to lock in what you've practised. Manual lessons are from £60 an hour, pay as you go, with no booking fees or extras.

What my manual learners say

Tobi

Geoff has been an absolutely amazing instructor, from start to finish… Because of him I’ve been able to get a pass on my very first attempt!

My initial search was for automatic lessons, but decided to give it a go after a chat with Geoff. Straight from the first lesson, I felt extremely comfortable with the manual gear box, as Geoff explained it so well and in a simple manner… I am extremely grateful that I listened to Geoff and had a go with manual car.

Questions about manual lessons

Is manual harder to learn?

It takes a little longer at the start, because you're learning the clutch and gears as well as the road. Once it clicks, it becomes second nature, and I'll go at your pace until it does.

What if I keep stalling?

Everyone stalls, especially on hills. It's part of learning, and I'll show you exactly why it happened and how to avoid it next time.

Can I drive an automatic with a manual licence?

Yes. A manual licence covers both manual and automatic cars.

I've had lessons with another instructor. Can I switch to you?

Yes. In our first lesson I'll see where you're up to, and we'll plan from there.
