Chipstead is one of my favourite villages around Sevenoaks. With its beautiful historic buildings, narrow roads and old-world charm, it has a character all of its own. I have a personal connection too: I worked at the Bricklayers Arms in my teens, so I've known the village for decades.

It's a lovely place to live, but it has some real challenges for a learner. Fortunately, it's also very close to Sevenoaks Driving Test Centre, which makes it an excellent place to start your lessons.

Learning on Chipstead's narrow roads

Some of Chipstead's roads are very narrow. The road past the George and Dragon is a good example: there's very little room for two cars to pass, and you need to watch for oncoming traffic all the time. At first, that can feel intimidating. But if you live here, it's something you'll need to be comfortable with.

So I focus on spotting oncoming vehicles early, recognising passing places and knowing when it's safer to wait than to go. One of the most important skills a learner can develop is seeing a problem before it becomes an emergency, and Chipstead gives you plenty of practice.

The junction towards Bessels Green

One of the biggest challenges for anyone living in Chipstead is the junction as you leave the village towards Bessels Green. The traffic is busy and fast, so judging a safe moment to pull out can be hard, especially when cars are going faster than you expect. It's not somewhere I'd ever want a learner to feel rushed.

Instead, I teach you to judge the speed and distance of approaching traffic, to know how much time you need to pull out safely, and to recognise when to simply wait. The aim isn't to get quicker at taking chances. It's to get better at seeing which gaps are genuinely safe. This is a junction to practise until you can handle it safely on your own, because passing your test is one thing, but leaving your own village confidently every day matters just as much.

Learn the roads you'll drive every day, not just the ones on the test.

Is Chipstead on the Sevenoaks test routes?

Not usually. Given how narrow some of its roads are, that's probably a relief to many learners! But it doesn't make learning around Chipstead any less important. Quite the opposite.

The test checks you can drive safely and independently, but it can't cover every road you'll meet after you pass. If you live in Chipstead, you'll need to handle its narrow roads, oncoming traffic and pulling out onto busier roads. That's why I believe lessons should prepare you for much more than the test.

Joining the A21

Chipstead is right by the A21. Joining it southbound from Chipstead and Riverhead is harder than at Morleys Roundabout, because the slip road has sharp bends and an uphill section, so you need the confidence to build your speed and join the traffic safely. We start on easier slip roads and work up to this one.

Geoff has been a fantastic teacher for our son who appreciated his clear and structured instruction. As parents we appreciated the flexibility around school timetables and relevant feedback after lessons on what to practice. He passed first time with an excellent result.

Minutes from the test roads

One of the biggest advantages of living in Chipstead is how close it is to Sevenoaks Driving Test Centre. From the village, we can quickly reach Bessels Green or Riverhead, both with easy access to roads used on Sevenoaks tests, so very little lesson time goes on travelling. Depending on how far you've got, we can practise junctions, roundabouts, residential roads, hills and faster country roads. As you get more confident, we'll add unfamiliar roads and independent driving, so you're ready for situations you haven't met before.

Practising with a parent around Chipstead

Practice with a parent makes a real difference. My learners who practise with a parent need about 21.5 hours of lessons on average, and those who learn only with me about 29. Just don't start a complete beginner on Chipstead's narrowest roads. Build basic control somewhere easier first. Once steering, braking, positioning and other road users feel comfortable, Chipstead is excellent practice, especially for recognising when there isn't room for two cars to pass and you need to wait.

The junction towards Bessels Green is important to master too, but I'd leave it until your son or daughter has built up experience and confidence in lessons first. Make sure they're insured, and that the supervisor is over 21 and has held a full licence for at least three years (A parent's guide to helping your child learn to drive in Sevenoaks).

Manual or automatic?

I teach both, in two compact cars that suit the narrow streets and country lanes of villages like Chipstead: a VW Polo and an electric Renault 5. The test standard is the same either way, but passing in an automatic gives you an automatic-only licence (Automatic vs manual driving lessons).

Preparing for the Sevenoaks test

Having sat in on over 120 Sevenoaks tests, I know the local roads and what examiners expect. As test day gets closer, we practise the kinds of roads you could meet and do mock tests to find anything that needs work. The aim is always a safe, confident, independent driver, not just a pass.
